Workshop #1: Internal EAP Champions: Increasing your value to your organization

Facilitator: Dr. John Maynard, CEO Employee Assistance Program Association

Aims of Workshop: This workshop trains HR Professionals or Company Representatives in employee assistance such that they:· understand the various EAP models of service delivery · learn how work organizations function· appreciate the role of EAPs as neutral problem solver to multiple clients· review key human resources policies and procedures relevant to EAPs· understand the consultative role with managers· design effective methods of promoting EAP services· differentiate an EAP assessment from a clinical intake· apply short-term counseling models effectively, and· identify current and future trends impacting EAPs

Synopsis

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) have proved themselves worldwide as an effective way to improve individual and organizational productivity and health – IF they are designed, managed, and evaluated appropriately.  EAPs serve organizations and their employees in multiple ways, ranging from consultation at the strategic level about issues with organization-wide implications to individual assistance to employees and family members experiencing personal difficulties.  As workplace wellness programs, the structure and operation of each EAP varies with the structure, functioning, and needs of the organization(s) it serves.  They are not “cookie-cutter” programs, and they require careful design and operation.

Competent HR professionals and Company representatives are expected to be knowledgeable about the many tools available to enhance and maximize the value of human capital within the organization.  These tools include such topics as effective motivational techniques, appropriate disciplinary procedures, design of employee benefits, etc.  A key tool in today’s business performance and staff well-being is EAP.  By becoming knowledgeable about EAP, the Internal Champion adds to his/her own value to the organization and is able to assist the organization in becoming and remaining more competitive and ultimately more profitable.

Workshop #2:  Mental Fitness Skills for Line Supervisors/Managers Facilitator: Ms Rose Zaffino, Director Clinical Operations PPC Worldwide

Aim of Workshop: This workshop enhances managers and supervisors’ people skills in mental fitness so that they gain:

  • awareness of mental health issuesbehavioural observation techniques to identify
  • mental health issuesintervention strategies that benefit both individual and organisation

Synopsis:

This workshop has been developed in response to the burgeoning problems related to mental health on a global basis. Therefore it has been developed to be adaptable in its applicability to different cultures and workplaces across the Asia Pacific Region. The workshop material uses current EAP issues and general information on the status of emotional health in a number of countries in the region and its impact on the employee, work colleagues, family, and the organisation. It uses recent (non identifiable) examples in an endeavour to highlight the extent of the problem today. Importantly it focuses on the positive side of what can be done to alleviate the problem.

Workshop #3:  People Engagement Skills for Line Supervisors/Managers: Providing emotional support to staff with family and marital difficulties

Facilitator: Dr. Ng Kok Mun, Associate Professor, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Aim of Workshop: This workshop equips managers with knowledge and skills to provide emotional first aid for their employees with family problems. Managers and Supervisors will:

  • learn types of familial and marital stressors
  • understand the impact of stress on work performance in general and familial stress in particular, and
  • develop coping strategies they can use to help their employees manage familial stressors

Synopsis:

High levels of stress as well as low level chronic stress can lead to reduced job performance and work productivity.  Job stress affects a person’s family well-being and familial stress affects a person’s work performance.  Helping employees to effectively manage their stress is never more pertinent in the current global economic downturn where job insecurity has become a real threat to large number of individuals and their families.  Participants will also learn to use the emotional intelligence model to facilitate stress management for themselves as well as for those they oversee in an organization

Workshop #4:  EAP 101: For practitioners interested in the EAP Profession

Matt Mollenhauer, Vice President of Operations, Chestnut Global Partners

Aim of Workship: This workshop targets counsellors and other professionals who are currently involved in providing EA services, or those interested in such services.

Synopsis:

As EAPs grow and expand in Asia, there remains a need to focus on the basics of EAPs and how they are structured and delivered. This full day session is designed for any participant (counselor, human resources, employer) who wants to better understand the core aspects of EAPs. The presentation will have the following agenda items: Brief History of EAPs, EAP Core Technology, EAP Program Models, Core and Ancillary Service Offerings, Current and Future Trends, Application of EAPs to Asia, The Role of Short-term Counseling. The session will have a combination of presentation and discussion and present an opportunity to learn and share experiences. Questions, and observations.
